An Urgent Matter: Share Your Christian Faith!

Although Christians make up 33 percent of the world’s population, ABC News’ recent report on the web regarding the dwindling number of Catholics worldwide has alarmed me. The report quotes Vatican paper, L’Osservatore Romano that "Islam has surpassed Roman Catholicism as the world’s largest religion." It also mentions the statement of Monsignor Vittor io Formenti that "For the first time in history, we are no longer at the top: Muslims have overtaken us." According to Monsignor Formenti, Catholics accounted for 17.4 percent of the world population while Muslims were 19.2 percent.

This news should be a wake-up call for us Catholics. Remember the mandate of our previous pope, John Paul II, about the need for new evangelization? We must bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to those who have not heard it and to those who do not believe in him. Those of us who believe

Filipinos as Modern-Day Catholic/Christian Missionaries An American missionary shared a rather intriguing story about how the mother of King Philip of Spain, had a dream/vision of a people being discovered under the reign of her son, which would help/assist
Spain to propagate Christianity throughout the pagan world. It came to pass that during his reign, the Philippines was discovered by Magellan and as such, our country was named after him. It is reasonable to assume that in subsequent expeditions by Spain to propagate the Gospel to the pagan world during the 16th century, some indigenous Filipinos inevitably accompanied/assisted, in one way or the other, the Spanish/ Christian missionaries in their evangelistic work.

Is USCIS Affidavit of Support Discharged in Bankruptcy? Many of you who have petitioned spouses for immigration into the United States have issued an US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) form called an affidavit of support. In that affidavit, you undertake to provide support for your spouse while that spouse lives in America. But even the best of
marriages do not last. The sad statistic is that 1 in 3 American marriages end in divorce.

‘HOMAGE TO MOTHERS’ We’ve just
celebrated
Easter, considered the greatest feast in the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar, and I hope all our Taliba readers had a most Blessed Easter.

I’m well aware that Mother’s Day is not until May 11th, but children should know that it is not the only day we pay tribute to mothers.

In the context of the Filipino Easter tradition, we pay homage to mothers as we observe an Easter dawn celebration known as the "Salubong," which literally means an encounter, the meeting between the Risen Christ and His anguished mother which is enacted in church patios in the Philippines, and in some parishes here in the United States. As the statue of a shrouded lady, Our Lady of Dolours, crosses the path of her Resurrected Son, an angel descends and lifts the black veil that wraps the grieving mother. When Mother meets Son, there is untold joy and exaltation and hymns like "Alleluia" and "Regina Coeli" soar to the heavens, sung by a choir of angels and echoed by the faithful in procession.

The "Salubong" also pays homage to all the mothers, many of whom have experienced the heartache of losing young children, before their time, to illness or violence. And as we pay tribute to mothers, we think of the children who have lost their mothers, before their time, to poverty, oppression and gross injustice.

The centuries-old "Salubong" is not celebrated here in exactly
